Over a century ago, the novelist Anthony Trollop listed the sports “essentially dear to the English nature”. These included hunting, shooting, rowing and horse racing. He was, of course, referring to the ‘gentleman class’, which through the public school system established football, rugby and cricket as national games. But hunting, rowing and horse racing, because of the expense involved, have remained primarily upper-class pastimes. Attendance at Henley Regatta, the high point of the rowing season, and Royal Ascot, for horse racing, remain the pinnacles of the upper class summer season.

Psychologists have succeeded in undermining parents’ confidence in their own authority which has had numerous consequences. In addition to the great modern classics on child care, there are countless articles in magazines and newspapers. With so much unsolicited advice flying about, mum and dad just don’t know what to do any more. In the end, they do nothing at all. So, from early childhood, the kids are in charge and parents lives are regulated according to the needs of their offspring. When the little dears develop into teenagers, they take complete control. Law authority over the years makes adolescent rebellion against parents all the more violent. If the young people are going to have a party, for instance, parents are asked to leave the house. Their presence merely spoils the fun. What else can the poor parents do but obey?

The legal system for England and Wales (there are separate ones for Scotland and Northern Ireland) does not have a criminal or civil code, but is founded upon two basic elements: Acts of Parliament or statute law, and common law which is the outcome of past decisions and practices based upon custom and reason. Common law has been slowly built up since Anglo-Saxon times one thousand years ago, while Parliament has been enacting statutes since the thirteenth century. Me and the others would be scrapping about something, and she’d say ‘OK, OK, let’s calm down, let’s go back to the beginning and sort it out – so we did, and it was sorted out!’ I remember this schoolfriend of mine, she fell off her bike and completely smashed her front teeth. She didn’t cry because she was hurt, but because her mother was so particular about her appearance. She said ‘She’ll kill me. She thinks I have such lovely teeth!’ I thought ‘Gosh – how weird, I couldn’t bear it if my mother was like that!’ In fact this friend came to my mum first and she rang and told her mum what had happened. Since the days of Shakespeare, the English of south east England has been considered the ‘standard’, for no better reason than that the south east is the region of economic and political power. RP persists as the accepted dialect of the national йlite.

Television encourages passive enjoyment. We become content with second-hand experiences. It is easy to sit in our armchairs watching others working. Little by little, television cuts us off from the real world. We get so lazy, we choose to spend a fine day in semi-darkness, glued to our sets, rather than go out into the world itself. Television may be a splendid medium of communication, but it prevents us from communicating with each other. We only become aware how totally irrelevant television is to real living when we spend a holiday by the sea or in the mountains, far away from civilisation. In quiet, natural surroundings, we quickly discover how little we miss to hypnotic tyranny of King Telly.
1. Write a topic sentence for the paragraph. The controlling idea is ‘disadvantages’.
2. Find and write out two examples of contrast relationship and underline the markers of contrast.
